Adult Program Frequently Asked Questions

What’s difference between sweep and sculling?

In sweep rowing, each rower has one oar; in sculling each rower has two. Sweep boats include the pair, the four and the eight. Sculling boats include the single, the double and the quad.

How heavy are the boats and Oars?

Our Single shells weigh about 34 lbs. Doubles/Pairs, 64 lbs.; Fours/Quads, 125 lbs.; Eights, 215 lbs. To move a shell from its rack to a sling or the water, each rower is lifting and carrying 27 to 34 lbs.

Sweep oars weigh about 6 lbs each and sculling oars weigh about 3.5 lbs. each, depending on their size and construction. These are carried (two at a time) to the beach and back separately from the boats.
