Vashon Island Rowing Club recognizes this land and the surrounding water for their significance to the Coast Salish peoples who came before us, and those who still inhabit the land today. We honor with gratitude the land itself and the Coast Salish peoples.
Vashon Island Rowing Club sits on the unceded, ancestral land of the first people of Vashon Island: the Duwamish, the Suquamish, and the Puyallup tribes. We honor the legacy and the history of these tribes – past, present and future.
This land was their home for millennia before Euro-American voyagers and settlers came and they were forcibly removed from these lands and relocated onto neighboring Reservations, including Puyallup, Nisqually, Squaxin Island, and Muckleshoot.
We stand in solidarity with these tribes; this community of indigenous people is still here, through continuous resilience, and resistance to systemic silencing and erasure of history.
