The 2014 spring rowing season for the junior rowers ended with a strong showing from VIJC. US Rowing moved the Youth National Championships venue to Sacramento on Lake Natoma this year, the first time in it’s 18 year history the event was held on the west coast. […]
Coach Richard Parr has been fine tuning the junior crew for a peak performance at the Northwest Regional Championships the entire spring season. And the team did not disappoint, qualifying a record ten boats and 18 rowers for the National Championships to be held at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California the weekend of June 13th through 15th.
A hot and humid day greeted the crew at Lake Vancouver outside Vancouver, Washington on Thursday, May 15th where over 1300 rowers from 26 clubs arrived to unload boats and gear from their trailers and assemble them for “combat” over the next three days. Weather conditions on Friday and Saturday were ideal with very light breezes leading to some extraordinary times turned in by area crews.
On Friday morning, the varsity crews advanced 8 boats to Saturday’s finals in seven events by placing in the top three in heat races. Then the team powered through by placing in the top three in all seven events on Saturday with three second place and four third place finishes. On Saturday, the junior’s qualified four more boats for Sunday finals and then, under rapidly deteriorating conditions, placed in three of those four races.
The qualifying varsity boats going to Nationals are the Men’s and Women’s quads (both with 2nd place finishes), Men’s and Women’s doubles (3rd and 2nd, respectively), Men’s and Women’s singles (3rd and 2nd), Men’s Lightweight double (3rd), Women’s Lightweight double and four (3rd and 2nd) and Women’s pair (3rd).
In junior varsity and novice races, the rowers entered fourteen races placing in eight of them and winning four. The winners were the Women’s Novice double with Katrina Heffernan and Rhea Enzian, the Men’s JV double with Patrick Hanson and Tate Gill, the Women’s Novice quad with Riley Lynch, Enzian, Heffernan, Adriana Yarkin and cox Cody Clevenger, and the Men’s JV quad where in their last race for Vashon, seniors, Alexander Wright and Ethan Rumburg, joined by teammates Lorenzo Higuera and Liam McConnell, stroked their boat to a win into strong head winds.
The Men’s high school eight took first place in its Sunday race (and second in the event) earning the right to throw Coach Parr into Lake Vancouver after a bet had been made.
The Women’s high school eight, dressed in pirate garb and shouting “argh” as they proceeded down the course, failed to defend last year’s title but still placed a very respectable third.
The Junior Crew will be raising funds to assist in sending the rowers to nationals with another car wash and bake sale scheduled for Saturday, June 7th. Donations can also be made online here. VIJC thanks the entire community for its generous support.

Coach Richard Parr has kept the focus this spring on the District Championships that took place this past weekend. “I was so impressed by the commitment shown by the rowers throughout the season, and it paid off on race day. Really brave efforts all around, and it was great to see so many of our athletes performing so well under pressure.”
One part high-octane athletic contest and another part beach party, the competition is held each year on Lake Vancouver — a shallow avian sanctuary a short distance from the Columbia River. The ospreys, eagles, herons and egrets didn’t know what to make of the dueling musical tributes between the 20 clubs and 1400 rowers represented. But after a spring of regattas the juniors from different clubs have gained mutual respect and friendship contributing to an extraordinary aura of teamwork, camaraderie and sportsmanship.
The Vashon Junior Crew statistics were simply extraordinary: 44 races entered with 37 “top three” finishes – 18 first, 11 second and 8 third places. 15 rowers and one coxswain are heading to Nationals on Lake Melton outside Oak Ridge, Tennessee the weekend of June 7 – 9 to compete in 8 separate events – both the number of rowers and events are club records. In the overall team rankings, Vashon Junior Women placed 4th and the Men 5th.
Vashon’s Nationals bound crew members are Kallie Heffernan and Kirsten Girard who took gold in the women’s double and were also joined by Anna Ripley and Hannah Russell in the women’s quad placing third.
Kaitlin Carter and Shannon Lipe took silver in the women’s lightweight double and then were joined by two novices – eighth grade stroke Emily Milbrath and Leanne Anderson – and coxswain Ally Clevenger to take another silver in the women’s lightweight four.
Gus Magnuson and Tate Gill also medaled in two national qualifying races taking a bronze in the men’s double and a silver in the men’s quad joined by Jacob Plihal and Isaiah Mosser-Rohe.
Nathaniel Petram and Baxter Call took silver in the lightweight men’s double and the national-bound team was completed with Anne Gaspers taking a bronze in the women’s single.
First place finishers in finals that are not going to nationals were Ella McConnell and Kai Li Scheer in the women’s third varsity double, Tea Schafer and Leanne Anderson in the women’s novice double, Lorenzo Higuera and Forrest Miller in the men’s novice double, Alexander Wright and Liam McConnell in the men’s third varsity double, Julian Baca and Ethan Rumberg in the men’s third varsity double and Nathaniel Petram and Baxter Call in the men’s second varsity double.
In an unusual finish the women’s high school eight tied for first with Holy Names Academy.
