National Learn to Row Day
Attention all wanna-be rowers!
Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 7th for the first ever Vashon Island Rowing Club National Learn to Row (NLTR) Day at Jensen Point Boathouse.
The 13th-annual National Learn to Row Day is sponsored by USRowing and Concept 2 (maker of the indoor rower), and is held in rowing clubs and health clubs throughout the United States. Competitive and recreational rowers range in age from 12 to over 90, so it is never too early or too late to take up the sport. For further information from US Rowing, see US Rowing.
Although VIRC has participated for many years in Water Daze, a local event sponsored by Vashon Park District, this is the first year VIRC has teamed up with USRowing to offer this free program to the public.
Vashon’s National Learn to Row Day provides an opportunity for Islanders ages 12 to 90+ to get in a rowing shell out on the water with experienced rowers from either the adult or junior teams.
After signing a waiver (of course!), participants will get on a rowing machine (erg) to practice rowing technique. Next they will help lift the shell into the water, tie into the rowing shoes, and learn how to actually use the oars to propel the shell. An experienced coxswain will provide instructions while at least 2 experienced rowers will stabilize the boat. Says long-time club member, Debby Jackson, “I have yet to find someone who did not enjoy the experience, despite feeling pretty uncoordinated with the technique. Quartermaster Harbor is such a lovely body of water and just getting out there in a (potentially) fast boat is totally cool.”
For those who want to continue their experience with rowing, the club will be offering a learn-to-row class for masters (ages 18 and up) in July and a junior summer camp (ages 13-19 in grades 8-12) starting the end of June and continuing through the first of August. A sign-up sheet will be available at the Vashon National Learn to Row Day event.
