Greenlake Summer Extravaganza

The Greenlake Summer Extravaganza regatta marks the end of the 2013 summer rowing season. This year’s event showcased a powerful display by upcoming, current and recently graduated Vashon Junior rowers. Vashon rowers put the “thunder” back in the event with 10 victories and four second place finishes in 17 races entered. Saturday’s light and consistent tail wind made for high stroke rates and fast times on the 1,000 meter course.

A highlight of the day was the first ever race by four freshmen women novice rowers with just two weeks of experience. The four, with stroke Riley Lynch, Virginia Miller, Oakley Reid, Katrina Heffernan, and coxed by Ally Clevenger, took gold and rowed more like seasoned veterans.

Bryn Gilbert and Kirsten Girard broke the gold medal ice early in the day with a win in the women’s open pair.  The junior men’s quad with Tate Gill (stroke), Jacob Plihal, brothers Fletcher and Baxter Call with novice Callie Andrews as coxswain, quickly moved out to an open water lead and coasted to a gold medal. Two other women’s boats followed up with impressive wins. The women’s quad with Avalon Koenig (stroke), Laney Williams, Colgate grad Kate Thomson, Emmie Kehoe, coxed by Andrews, followed the men’s lead, winning by open water.

UW rower and older sister Charlotte Kehoe then joined this foursome and three current junior women, Kalie Heffernan, Tea Schaffer and Gilbert with cox Olivia Mackie, for a close win in the women’s open eight race.

The women’s lightweight four with Emily Milbrath (stroke), Girard, Katelyn Carter, Hannah Russell, and Clevenger coxing, took another first place medal.  Baxter Call rowed his shell to a win in the men’s open single race.

The women’s intermediate four race was won by Schaffer (stroke), Caprial Turner, Kalie Heffernan and Russell, with Mackie coxing. Girard (stroke) and Anne Gaspers claimed gold in the women’s open double. And finally, Patrick Hansen (stroke), Fletcher Call, Charles Elliott and Jack Mask with Clevenger coxing, took the men’s lightweight four title. Every Vashon junior rower who attended the Summer Extravaganza returned home with at least one gold medal.  Wow!
