VASHON ISLAND JUNIOR CREW

Vashon Island Rowing Club offers Junior rowing programs in Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Junior rowers are age 13 to 19 and in grade 8 through 12. Rowing blends power, balance, finesse, and endurance on the water in a cooperative, co-ed team atmosphere. Novice rowers will learn the basics of rowing and receive a well rounded introduction to crew. Returning rowers will continue to train for technique and fitness. Juniors interested in being a coxswain are encouraged to sign up. Regatta competitions require off-island travel and weekends. Novice rowers are accepted for Spring, Summer and Fall sessions. Practice is at Jensen Point Boathouse from 3:10 until 5:40 Monday through Friday during the season.

Registration deadlines, schedules, and fees associated with each season are shown on the page for that season (click on the season name below). A limited amount of financial aid is available for all programs except the six-week summer session and the winter conditioning. • Spring Season, from mid-January through late May, focuses on short (sprint) races and concludes with the USRowing Junior Regional Championships in Vancouver, WA. Rowers who qualify at the regional regatta may be invited to participate in USRowing Youth National Championships in June.
  • Summer Season, from late June through early August, is less formal and a good time to get or stay in shape, improve your form, or just give rowing a try. Season will end with Green Lake Summer Regatta in early August.
  • Fall Season, from late August through mid-November, focuses on longer distance races (head races) and typically concludes with the Green Lake Frostbite Regatta and the Head of the Lake Regatta (for Varsity) the first weekend in November.
  • Winter Conditioning, at the conclusion of fall season we offer winter conditioning/rowing to continuing rowers. Novices are not accepted for this session.
