Green Lake Spring Regatta 2017

Green Lake Spring Regatta 2017

If it’s a rainy Saturday in March and there are as many dogs as there are people, it must be the Green Lake Spring Regatta in Seattle. Notorious for its consistently adverse weather conditions, this year’s event held true to form with a headwind leading […]

Salt Water Scrimmage 2017

Salt Water Scrimmage 2017

The Vashon Island Rowing Club’s junior crew kicked off its 2017 spring racing season with a strong showing at the annual Salt Water Scrimmage on its home waters of Quartermaster Harbor last Sunday.

With conditions a little less cold, dryer than usual and with only a slight headwind, a good crowd and the occasional seal saw the juniors race in 17 of 23 events against crews from the Bainbridge Island Rowing Club and Olympia Area Rowing. Seventeen boats placed in the top three of their respective races, leading to 10 wins, six second- and one third-place finish at the end of the day.

Solstice Scrimmage 2016

Solstice Scrimmage 2016

Winter is a season of short days and fickle weather, so for most crew teams, it means lot of training on rowing machines and not much time on the water. That makes it a bit of risk to invite teams to scrimmage in the middle […]

Portland Fall Classic Regatta – 2016

Portland Fall Classic Regatta – 2016

A log in the water can be a hazard, but a whole, floating tree is what rowers in the 10th annual Portland Fall Classic had to avoid during the second flight of races this last Sunday.

The Vashon Island Rowing Club (VIRC), accustomed to its share of floating debris in Quartermaster Harbor, managed to avoid the danger and bring home nine medals as they rowed the 5000-meter course along the Willamette River.  With the Portland skyline as a backdrop and under a nearly constant drizzle of rain, Vashon’s Masters and Junior rowers turned in an impressive performance, tying for third overall against 26 other clubs.

Tail of the Lake Regatta 2016

Tail of the Lake Regatta 2016

Imagine a race where you miss winning silver by 3/10 of a second and can’t actually see your closest competitor.  That is the beauty and the maddening part of a head race, and that is exactly what the Vashon Island Rowing Club’s (VIRC) Junior Women’s […]

The Boys of ’36

The Boys of ’36

Come join the Vashon Island Rowing Club for a special live feed on the big screen at the Vashon Theatre of the highly-anticipated documentary “The Boys of ’36.” Based on Daniel James Brown’s best-seller “The Boys in the Boat,” the documentary tells the inspiring, true story of the rough-and-tumble ‘band of brothers’ who rowed for the University of Washington, fending off all challengers to reach the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Against all odds, both personal and competitive, the “boys” carried  their nation on their shoulders during an epic battle against Adolf Hitler’s handpicked team.

Presented by Greentech, PBS and Vashon Island Rowing Club, this FREE screening of “The Boys of ’36” begins at 9pm on Tuesday, August 2nd at the Vashon Theatre. Doors open at 8:30, with a short, pre-program hosted by the rowing club at 8:45.

2016 US Rowing Junior National Championships

2016 US Rowing Junior National Championships

One might be tempted to assume that the 2016 USRowing Junior National Championships were plagued by leprechauns. First was the unrelenting greenness of the Lake Mercer course with trees hovering out from the banks. Then, the cancellation of all racing on Thursday’s practice day eliminated […]
